October Activities at Riseley House – Joy, Laughter & Local Adventures
At Riseley House, we believe every day should be filled with warmth, joy and connection. This October has been no exception – from cheerful community outings to spooky celebrations, life here has been vibrant and full of heart. Here's a look at what we've been up to this month at our family-owned care home in Macclesfield.
🍰 Afternoon Trips & Local Laughs
Our regular afternoon stroll to the local pub has become a highlight for many of our residents. Just a short walk from Riseley House, it’s a chance to soak up fresh air, enjoy good company, and share a drink with the friendly locals who always make us feel so welcome. Laughter echoed as old stories were swapped over a pint, creating treasured memories with neighbours and friends.
🎃 A Halloween to Remember
On 27th October, we opened our doors for our much-anticipated Halloween party. Residents, families and friends joined in the festivities, with spooky decorations, homemade treats, and costumes galore. These moments of joy help our residents feel truly connected – not just to each other, but to the wider community that surrounds us.

🌿 Garden Centre Outing – A Splash of Early Festivity
We also paid a lovely visit to Fairways Garden Centre in Sutton this month. The Christmas decorations were already on display – a surprise to some of us, but certainly a spark of early excitement! Residents browsed the beautiful displays, discovered “soap-soaked sponges” (who knew?!), and finished the trip with a comforting cup of tea and a slice of cake.

Music Therapy and Joyful Connection at Riseley House
Music Therapy at Riseley House: An Uplifting September Singalong in Our Music Therapy Care Home
On 1st September 2025, the halls of Riseley House were filled with laughter, movement, and familiar melodies as residents came together for a joyful music therapy care home and singalong session. The atmosphere was vibrant and electric, with the scent of freshly brewed tea wafting through the air, enhancing the sense of home. Led by our brilliant Activities Coordinator Jessica, this regular event has fast become a highlight for many of our residents, creating connection, expression, and community through the power of music. It is a time when voices unite, and joy is palpable, illustrating the very essence of our care home’s ethos.
At our music therapy care home, we understand that music has the power to heal and connect individuals from all walks of life.

The Power of Music in Dementia and Elderly Care
Music therapy is not just about entertainment—it's a powerful tool in specialist care. For residents living with dementia, music can unlock memories, reduce anxiety, and encourage interaction even when verbal communication is difficult. At Riseley House, we use these sessions to nurture both emotional and physical well-being, all in a safe, supportive setting.
In our music therapy care home, this unique approach is tailored to meet the needs of each resident.
Research has shown that music therapy can significantly improve the quality of life for those facing the challenges of dementia. For instance, a study published in a renowned journal indicated that music therapy led to a 30% increase in engagement among participants, showcasing how music can serve as a bridge to better emotional and cognitive worlds. This understanding shapes our approach at Riseley House, where we strive to implement music-based interventions tailored to individual preferences and histories.
From Gentle Movements to Full-Hearted Singing
The session began with soft background music and gentle encouragement from Jessica, who warmly welcomed each resident by name. As the tempo picked up, so did the smiles—residents clapped in rhythm, swayed side to side, and many even stood to dance, showing just how energising music can be. Familiar classics and uplifting tunes brought back memories and built new joyful moments. One resident called out, "Go on, Carol!" as applause rang out around the room.
In one memorable session, a resident named Margaret surprised everyone by singing along to her favourite song, 'Dancing Queen.' Her voice, though soft, resonated with joy, drawing others to join in. Such moments highlight the profound impact of music on the soul—it offers a sense of belonging and an opportunity to relive cherished memories. As the session progressed, Jessica encouraged everyone to share their own musical stories, which fostered deeper connections among residents, allowing them to bond over shared experiences and nostalgia.
Moments like these are what make our music therapy care home a special place for every resident.
"Music unlocks something truly special" – Jessica
Jessica, our Activities Coordinator, shared her thoughts on why sessions like these are so meaningful:
Jessica emphasised the importance of tailoring music therapy sessions to the unique preferences of each resident. She often researches their musical backgrounds before sessions, curating playlists that resonate with their personal histories. This thoughtful approach ensures that every note played is not just heard but felt, making each session a deeply personal experience.
Our music therapy care home prioritises the individual experiences of each resident, ensuring everyone feels included.
"Music unlocks something truly special in our residents. It’s not just about singing; it’s about feeling connected, seen, and uplifted. Whether it’s a toe tap, a hum, or a full singalong—it’s beautiful to watch residents come alive."
Benefits Beyond the Songs
The benefits of music therapy extend beyond the immediate joy it brings. Studies have shown that engaging with music can lead to improved cognitive function, reduced levels of depression, and greater overall satisfaction with life. It can act as a non-verbal means of communication, allowing residents who struggle to articulate their thoughts and feelings to express themselves in other ways. This is particularly important in our care home, where many residents may have lost the ability to communicate verbally due to dementia.
In a music therapy care home, the impact of music extends far beyond the sessions.
- Encourages mobility and coordination
- Improves mood and reduces anxiety
- Stimulates memory and recognition
- Fosters social interaction and confidence
Our music sessions also help build rapport between staff and residents. As team members joined in clapping and dancing, the sense of belonging deepened—because at Riseley House, we care for one another like family.
Moreover, these music sessions encourage family members to participate, bridging the gap between generations. When relatives visit, they often join in the singalongs, creating a rich tapestry of shared experiences that strengthens family bonds. We have seen firsthand how a simple song can evoke laughter and tears alike, creating lasting memories for everyone involved.
These shared experiences are what make our music therapy care home a memorable place for families.
Creating a Home Filled with Joy
Every corner of Riseley House echoes with warmth, but on days like these, that warmth becomes music. Our music therapy care home sessions form part of a broader activities programme that includes arts and crafts, gardening, movie afternoons, and intergenerational events with local schools. We understand the significance of creating an environment where residents feel safe and cherished, promoting mental health and emotional well-being. The little things, like singing a cherished song or enjoying a warm cup of tea, profoundly impact how our residents feel each day, especially in our music therapy care home.
Every activity in our music therapy care home is designed to enhance the well-being of all residents.

Keeping well over Winter: Practical advice for Elderly Relatives and their families
Winter can be a challenging time for many, especially for elderly individuals who may face health risks from colder weather, shorter days, and reduced mobility. Keeping well over winter is vital.
As Britons, we often ask, 'Are you keeping well?' It’s a simple question, but during winter, it’s one that carries extra weight, especially for our elderly loved ones.
For families in Macclesfield caring for elderly relatives, it’s essential to focus on physical and mental well-being during this season. By taking a proactive approach, you can help keep their immune system, health, and spirits high as the temperature drops.
If you’re looking for tips to keep elderly relatives healthy over the winter break, this guide provides practical advice to support their well-being and ensure they thrive during the colder months.
The Importance of Staying Healthy in Winter
Winter brings unique challenges for us all, but especially older people. The cold weather increases the risk of illnesses such as colds and flu, while icy conditions can make outdoor activities more hazardous (will it snow again?!!). Limited daylight hours can also impact mood, leading to feelings of isolation or low energy.
Physical and mental health are deeply connected. Staying active, eating well, and maintaining social connections can significantly improve overall well-being. For elderly individuals, small, consistent actions can help combat the physical effects of winter while boosting their emotional resilience.
Physical Health Tips
Nutrition
A nutritious diet is key to supporting the immune system during winter. Ensure your elderly relatives are eating meals that include:
- Immune-boosting foods: Incorporate fruits and vegetables rich in vitamins C and D, such as oranges, broccoli, and leafy greens.
- Warming dishes: Soups and stews are excellent options that provide essential nutrients while helping to keep the body warm.
- Healthy fats: Include foods like nuts, seeds, and oily fish, which are beneficial for heart and brain health.
Don’t forget hydration. Although we often associate drinking plenty of water with summer, staying hydrated is just as important in winter. Offer herbal teas, warm milk, or low-sugar hot chocolate as alternatives to water.
Exercise
Regular physical activity helps improve circulation, maintain muscle strength, and reduce the risk of falls. Here are some suggestions for keeping active:
- Indoor exercises: Gentle routines like chair yoga, stretching, or light resistance exercises are perfect for maintaining mobility indoors.
- Outdoor walks: On clear, dry days, encourage short walks in a safe area with appropriate clothing and non-slip footwear.
- Household tasks: Simple chores like tidying up or arranging bookshelves can keep the body moving and provide a sense of accomplishment.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FQoGtvm62HE
Preventative Measures
Keeping elderly relatives warm and protected from illnesses is crucial. Consider these steps:
- Layer up: Ensure they have warm, layered clothing and use blankets or heated pads when sitting for extended periods.
- Hand hygiene: Remind them of the importance of washing hands regularly, especially if they’ve been out in public.
- Avoid loneliness: Encourage connections with friends, neighbours, or local groups to help combat isolation during the winter months. For more ideas, see our article on reducing loneliness at Christmas.
Mental Well-being Tips
Social Connections
Loneliness can be particularly difficult during winter. Staying socially connected can make a big difference to mental health:
- Arrange regular visits or video calls with family and friends.
- Encourage participation in local Macclesfield events, such as community centres or library groups.
- Organise small gatherings, like a coffee morning or board game afternoon, to keep them engaged.
Activities for Mental Stimulation
Keeping the mind active is just as important as physical activity. Here are some ideas:
- Puzzles and games: Crosswords, jigsaw puzzles, and card games can provide hours of enjoyment.
- Creative hobbies: Encourage activities like knitting, painting, or scrapbooking to spark creativity.
- Reminiscence sessions: Looking through photo albums or sharing stories from the past can boost memory and emotional well-being.
Light Exposure
The shorter days of winter can affect mood and energy levels. Help elderly relatives get as much natural light as possible:
- Encourage sitting near a window during daylight hours.
- Take short outdoor walks on sunny days.
- Consider a light therapy lamp if they’re struggling with seasonal affective disorder (SAD).
- Keeping warm is vital too. Here's some tips on the Age UK website.
How Families in Macclesfield Can Help
As a caregiver or family member, there are plenty of ways you can make winter more manageable for your elderly relatives. Start by creating a simple checklist to ensure their daily needs are met. This might include:
- Preparing warm, nutritious meals.
- Setting up a daily routine that includes both physical and mental activities.
- Checking their home is warm and safe, such as sealing draughts and ensuring they have easy access to essentials.
Take advantage of local resources in Macclesfield to provide additional support.
- Combat loneliness: Explore ways to ensure elderly relatives remain socially engaged, like attending local events or simply reaching out for regular chats. For more ideas, visit our guide on supporting elderly relatives during Christmas. Community groups, fitness classes for seniors, and befriending schemes can offer companionship and a sense of belonging. For example, local charities often organise winter activities tailored to elderly individuals, such as craft workshops or tea parties.
