Music Therapy at Riseley House: An Uplifting September Singalong in Our Music Therapy Care Home

On 1st September 2025, the halls of Riseley House were filled with laughter, movement, and familiar melodies as residents came together for a joyful music therapy care home and singalong session. The atmosphere was vibrant and electric, with the scent of freshly brewed tea wafting through the air, enhancing the sense of home. Led by our brilliant Activities Coordinator Jessica, this regular event has fast become a highlight for many of our residents, creating connection, expression, and community through the power of music. It is a time when voices unite, and joy is palpable, illustrating the very essence of our care home’s ethos.

At our music therapy care home, we understand that music has the power to heal and connect individuals from all walks of life.

The Power of Music in Dementia and Elderly Care

Music therapy is not just about entertainment—it’s a powerful tool in specialist care. For residents living with dementia, music can unlock memories, reduce anxiety, and encourage interaction even when verbal communication is difficult. At Riseley House, we use these sessions to nurture both emotional and physical well-being, all in a safe, supportive setting.

In our music therapy care home, this unique approach is tailored to meet the needs of each resident.

Research has shown that music therapy can significantly improve the quality of life for those facing the challenges of dementia. For instance, a study published in a renowned journal indicated that music therapy led to a 30% increase in engagement among participants, showcasing how music can serve as a bridge to better emotional and cognitive worlds. This understanding shapes our approach at Riseley House, where we strive to implement music-based interventions tailored to individual preferences and histories.

From Gentle Movements to Full-Hearted Singing

The session began with soft background music and gentle encouragement from Jessica, who warmly welcomed each resident by name. As the tempo picked up, so did the smiles—residents clapped in rhythm, swayed side to side, and many even stood to dance, showing just how energising music can be. Familiar classics and uplifting tunes brought back memories and built new joyful moments. One resident called out, “Go on, Carol!” as applause rang out around the room.

In one memorable session, a resident named Margaret surprised everyone by singing along to her favourite song, ‘Dancing Queen.’ Her voice, though soft, resonated with joy, drawing others to join in. Such moments highlight the profound impact of music on the soul—it offers a sense of belonging and an opportunity to relive cherished memories. As the session progressed, Jessica encouraged everyone to share their own musical stories, which fostered deeper connections among residents, allowing them to bond over shared experiences and nostalgia.

Moments like these are what make our music therapy care home a special place for every resident.

“Music unlocks something truly special” – Jessica

Jessica, our Activities Coordinator, shared her thoughts on why sessions like these are so meaningful:

Jessica emphasised the importance of tailoring music therapy sessions to the unique preferences of each resident. She often researches their musical backgrounds before sessions, curating playlists that resonate with their personal histories. This thoughtful approach ensures that every note played is not just heard but felt, making each session a deeply personal experience.

Our music therapy care home prioritises the individual experiences of each resident, ensuring everyone feels included.

“Music unlocks something truly special in our residents. It’s not just about singing; it’s about feeling connected, seen, and uplifted. Whether it’s a toe tap, a hum, or a full singalong—it’s beautiful to watch residents come alive.”

Benefits Beyond the Songs

The benefits of music therapy extend beyond the immediate joy it brings. Studies have shown that engaging with music can lead to improved cognitive function, reduced levels of depression, and greater overall satisfaction with life. It can act as a non-verbal means of communication, allowing residents who struggle to articulate their thoughts and feelings to express themselves in other ways. This is particularly important in our care home, where many residents may have lost the ability to communicate verbally due to dementia.

In a music therapy care home, the impact of music extends far beyond the sessions.

  • Encourages mobility and coordination
  • Improves mood and reduces anxiety
  • Stimulates memory and recognition
  • Fosters social interaction and confidence

Our music sessions also help build rapport between staff and residents. As team members joined in clapping and dancing, the sense of belonging deepened—because at Riseley House, we care for one another like family.

Moreover, these music sessions encourage family members to participate, bridging the gap between generations. When relatives visit, they often join in the singalongs, creating a rich tapestry of shared experiences that strengthens family bonds. We have seen firsthand how a simple song can evoke laughter and tears alike, creating lasting memories for everyone involved.

These shared experiences are what make our music therapy care home a memorable place for families.

Creating a Home Filled with Joy

Every corner of Riseley House echoes with warmth, but on days like these, that warmth becomes music. Our music therapy care home sessions form part of a broader activities programme that includes arts and crafts, gardening, movie afternoons, and intergenerational events with local schools.
